Institutional Context

Job roles:

During the production of my film trailer, i will take on board a number of different roles in order to complete my task, here ,listed below, is a few of the jobs i will be doing.

Costume/Props:

I will be in charge of organising every characters costumes, this may consist of my making or purchasing costumes from shops such as oxfam as i will only being using them once and want a cost effective option. It is important that the costumes are correct for the genre and are suitable for the trailer otherwise the trailer will not be effective, also this is an important role as the costumes will help the representation of the characters. Along the production line i will also be using props for the trailer, this will include me either making, finding or purchasing props for the trailer.

Script/Storyline:

This can possibly change during the process of filming as when filming i could suddenly want to
improve on the script. It is important to have a script so the actors know what to act out, what they will say and what facial expressions they will have. This is a key part of the production and has to be perfect otherwise the trailer will flop and not attract its audience, as if the the storyline was rubbish then nobody would be intrigued by the trailer and want to see the film. So it is important that i create a script that fits with the genre and attracts the target audience.

Lighting:

Lighting is a key factor in creating a quality trailer, i will decide on whether i will use natural lighting or use lights. Lighting is important as it can create the mood, such as dark lighting in a horror film would set the mood and create tension. Lighting is also important in setting the mood.

Health and Safety:

This role is very important in the whole production of the trailer, since i will ensure all people involved are safe this is a large and key role, risk assessments of all locations i will film in are essential and will help me eliminate risks and reduce them to a minimum so nobody will get injured and and everyone involved will remain healthy.

Editing and post production:

Editing and post production is an important role within making the trailer as it involves editing each shot so they fit smoothly together in order to create the best effect. I will also need to edit the sound and add a soundtrack if possible. This process can also involve visual editing, special effect editing, adding in transitions and adding text slides. All of this is important as it will complete the trailer and ultimately, make or break the trailer.

Primary audience research

I will start my primary audience research off by asking 20 people, 10 male and 10 female, at random in the library to complete my questionnaire, this will help me gain a better understanding of my target audience and there wants. Here is an image of my questionnaire template.

Since the image above is hard to read i have posted the contents of the questionnaire bellow;

From this simple questionnaire i have found out some key facts, also since i had already found out the age and gender of my target audience from my secondary research this has only helped me find out more.

This is a pie chart i have created from the feedback i gained from my questionnaire. As you can see the majority of people said that horror was there favourite type of genre, comedy came in second and action third. 40% of the people preferred horror as there favourite so this tells me that i have a wide and large audience to aim at.

I have found out that people visit the cinema about twice a month and normally visit the cinema with there partner or friends, however people prefer to watch films at home. I found out that people frequently buy films, also films that they have already seen before. A major question that was answered was "Would you watch a film simply because it has a specific actor in?" this question was answered with 80% of people saying they would, however only a minor 15% said they would watch a film because of a specific director, this have given me a good insight into the importance of actors.

I also completed some research into peoples tastes in music and drink, i found out that coke was voted the most popular non alcoholic drink and cider topping the question for favourite alcoholic drink, this has helped me understand what my target audience like. Also i found out that rock and pop music scored equally high for the favourite genre of music.

Secondary Audience Research

I have conducted some secondary audience research for the film, "The Exorcism Of Emily Rose" as the genre is horror. I have found out some statistics for this film from the website 'PearlandDean'; 51% of the audience are females and 49% males, this fact doesn't give me a clear insight into the different genders for genres as the both have practically the same percentage of male and female viewers. However the age group which this film was for is clear, 55% of the audience where between the age of 15 - 24, 30% of the audience is between the age of 25 - 34, 12% of the audience is between the age of 35 and 44, and finally 3% of the audience is 45+. Also 0% of the audience is between the age of 4 and 14. This have given me a good insight into what age group i would aim at, 55% of "The Exorcism Of Emily Rose"audience are between the age of 15 and 24.

Paranormal Activity, released in November 2009 is a film in the horror genre, this film is unique because it is filmed in a style of a handheld camera documentary by the characters. I found the following information on the website 'Pearl and Dean', Paranormal Activity's audience was 53% male and 47%, this still leaves the gender for horror genres open as they are both close numbers with only a 6% difference. However the age the films audience was gives us a good clear view, with 79% being aged 15-24, this is a very large section and 21% being over 25. This gives me a good clear view of what age i should think about aiming at as Paranormal Activity is a similar film to one i wish to create a trailer for.

After looking at a few different horror films i have found out that this genre is mainly aimed at males, however they are also aimed at females but more Gorey films with violence are aimed at males. Also i have found out that horror films are clearly aimed at 15 to 24 year olds as this is there main audience, also they are aimed at 25 to 34 year olds with only a small percentage aimed at people older than 45.

From my secondary audience research i have found out that horror movies are generally aimed at males, but also females are still a large proportion of their audience. Also i have found out that the horror genres main audience is between the ages of 15 and 24.

This is a video profile for 'townies' who, from my secondary research, are my target audience for the horror genre. I found this information out from the website 'UK Tribes' and the video from 'YouTube'.
